Diamond Step Shawl

Updated: Mar 15, 2021

Free Crochet Pattern

When younger I fondly remember playing dress up with a super cosy shawl of my grandmother's, it was unusual with a collar to the shawl. The Diamond Step Shawl has been designed with this childhood memory in mind, created as a diamond shape to give you a cosy collar, by folding over the top flat edge.

The step blocks form an intricate detail in the body of the shawl and a pretty finishing edge for the shawl. The grids give an extra detail outlining the deep v shaping of the shawl.

Using an over large hook this gives a wonderful flow to the shawl, even before blocking. As with all my patterns there are both UK and US versions available for you.

I Used

  • 4 x Stylecraft Batik DK; 138m per 50g ball; 80% premium acrylic, 20% wool. Sample in Cherry 1904.

  • US size 10/6mm crochet hook

  • lobster clasp stitch marker for the centre point

  • wool needle

Size

The sample measurements are 46” wingspan, 42” depth after blocking.

Gauge

13 sts x 8 rows = 10cm /4” square in tr before blocking. Gauge is not crucial to this project but will have an impact on the final size and amount of yarn required.

Pattern Notes

  • Count the number of steps each side of the centre point to make sure they match up.(Row 9)

  • Count the number of grids each side of the centre point, if these do not match the shawl will become skewed quickly. (Row 7)
